The Speed Camera Lottery

The Fun Theory (by Volkswagen) is a site is dedicated to the thought that something as simple as fun is the easiest way to change people’s behaviour for the better. You might remember them for their project Piano Stairs

Well, the Speed Camera Lottery (submitted by Kevin Richardson, USA), has been the winning idea of the fun theory award. An innovate idea that took place in a street of Stockholm (Sweden) where a Speed Camera Lottery device would photograph all plates passing beneath it, same procedure as traditional speed cameras but with the difference that a portion of the fines levied against speeders, would be pooled in a lottery, with a random winner periodically drawn from the group of speed-limit adherents.

Can this innovative idea get more people to obey the speed limit by making it fun to do? Yes! Average speed before the installation of the Speed Camera Lottery sign on a multilane street was 32 kilometers an hour. That figure dropped to 25 kilometers an hour during a three-day test… So not only fun also productive!
